What a Birth Chart Shows

A natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at your birth. Each planet sits in a sign, which colours how it expresses, and in a house, which shows the area of life it works through. The Sun is your core self, the Moon your emotions, Mercury your mind, Venus your loves and Mars your drive, while the outer planets describe deeper, generational themes.

Signs, Houses and Angles

The chart is anchored by its angles. The Ascendant marks the first house and your outward self, and the Midheaven marks your public direction. From the Ascendant the twelve houses divide the chart into life areas, from identity and money to relationships and career, so the same planet means something different depending on the house it falls in.

Reading Your Chart

Start with the big three, your Sun, Moon and Rising signs, then look at where Venus and Mars sit for love and drive, and which houses hold the most planets. The chart is a tool for self-reflection rather than a script, and the more of it you read together the fuller and more balanced the picture becomes. An exact birth time and place are needed for the houses and angles.

The Role of the Houses

A planet's sign describes how it acts, but its house describes where in life it acts, from money and home to work and relationships. The twelve houses are anchored by your exact birth time and place, since they're built from the Ascendant. Two people born the same day can share planetary signs yet have those planets fall in completely different houses, which is part of why a full chart needs more than a date.

Angles as the Personal Frame

The Ascendant and Midheaven are the most personal points in the chart, and they move fast, the Ascendant shifting roughly every two hours. They set the whole house framework, so an accurate birth time is what turns a general planetary picture into your specific chart. Without a time, the planet signs still read, but the houses and angles can't be placed with confidence.

Tropical, Not Sidereal

This chart uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons and the spring equinox, which is the Western standard. That's a different reference from the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology, so your Sun sign here may not match a Vedic reading. Neither is wrong; they simply measure from different starting points.

How this chart compares to related ones

This is the Western (tropical) natal chart drawn as a wheel, with every planet, the Ascendant, Midheaven and the twelve houses. For the Indian sidereal view of the same birth, use the Vedic Kundli. For just the raw planetary degrees as a list, see planetary positions, and for only the ascendant sign use the rising sign calculator.

Birth Chart Questions, Answered

What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of where every planet sat in the zodiac at the moment of your birth, anchored by your Ascendant and Midheaven. It is the basis of a full astrological reading.

What information do I need?

You need your birth date, your exact birth time with timezone, and your birthplace. The time and place are essential for the Ascendant, Midheaven and the twelve house positions.

What are houses in a chart?

The houses are twelve divisions of the chart, starting from the Ascendant, that represent areas of life such as identity, money, relationships and career. A planet's house shows where its energy is most active.

Positions are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris. Astrological interpretations are traditional and are offered for reflection, not as guaranteed predictions.
