Find your birth nakshatra, the lunar mansion the Moon occupied when you were born, along with its pada or quarter. This calculator computes the real sidereal position of the Moon and returns your nakshatra, its pada, the ruling planet and presiding deity, and a short note on the qualities it carries. It is one of the most personal points in Vedic astrology.

What a Nakshatra Is

The sidereal zodiac is divided into twenty-seven nakshatras, or lunar mansions, each spanning thirteen degrees and twenty minutes. The one the Moon sits in at birth, your janma nakshatra, is read as a key to temperament, compatibility and timing. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet and a deity that shape its nature, from the swift, healing energy of Ashwini to the disciplined depth of Pushya.

The Four Padas

Every nakshatra is divided into four padas, or quarters, each a little over three degrees wide. The pada refines the reading and links the nakshatra to a sign in the navamsa chart, which matters in detailed Vedic work and in matching. Because the Moon moves quickly, an accurate birth time sharpens the pada when the Moon is near a boundary.

Why It Matters

Your nakshatra is the foundation of several Vedic methods. It sets the starting point of your Vimshottari Dasha, the planetary period timeline, and it is central to Kundli Matching, where the nakshatras of two people are compared. Knowing your janma nakshatra is often the first step a Vedic astrologer takes when reading a chart.

Finding Your Nakshatra

Enter your birth date, time and timezone, then press Calculate. The tool reads the Moon's exact sidereal position and returns your birth nakshatra, the lunar mansion the Moon occupied, with its pada, ruling planet and presiding deity. Because the Moon moves quickly, a correct birth time keeps both the nakshatra and its quarter accurate.

The Twenty-Seven Lunar Mansions

Vedic astrology divides the zodiac into twenty-seven nakshatras of thirteen degrees and twenty minutes each, a lunar scheme that predates the twelve-sign system in Indian tradition. Every nakshatra has its own ruling planet and presiding deity, from Ashwini at the start to Revati at the end. The one the Moon occupied at your birth is your birth star, and it carries as much weight in a reading as a Western Sun sign does in the West.

Padas and the Naming Letter

Each nakshatra splits into four padas of three degrees and twenty minutes, which tie into the deeper navamsa division of the chart. The pada refines the birth star's meaning and, in custom, points to a syllable traditionally used as the first sound of a child's name. Because the Moon moves quickly, the pada can change within an hour or two, which is why the tool reads your exact time before fixing it.

Nakshatra vs Moon Sign

A nakshatra divides the zodiac into twenty-seven lunar mansions, so it is far more specific than a Moon sign, which uses only twelve signs. One Moon sign always spans more than two nakshatras. Use the Moon sign for a quick emotional summary, and this calculator for the precise lunar mansion and pada behind it. An accurate birth time sharpens the pada near its boundaries.

Nakshatra and Pada Questions

What is a nakshatra?

A nakshatra is one of the twenty-seven lunar mansions of the sidereal zodiac. Your birth nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born, and it is read for temperament, compatibility and timing.

What is a pada?

A pada is one of the four quarters of a nakshatra. It refines the reading and connects the nakshatra to a sign in the navamsa chart, which matters in detailed analysis and in marriage matching.

Do I need my birth time?

A birth time and timezone give the most accurate pada, since the Moon moves quickly and can cross a boundary within hours. Without a time the calculator uses noon, which is usually but not always exact.

Positions are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris. Astrological interpretations are traditional and are offered for reflection, not as guaranteed predictions.
