Ashtakavarga is the Vedic system that scores the strength of each sign in your chart. Enter your birth details and this calculator computes the Sarvashtakavarga, the combined bindu score of all twelve signs out of three hundred and thirty-seven, along with each planet's own Bhinnashtakavarga total, so you can see which areas of your chart are strongest.

What Ashtakavarga Measures

In Ashtakavarga each of the seven planets contributes benefic points, called bindus, to the signs, according to classical tables. Adding the contributions gives every sign a score. Signs with more bindus, usually twenty-eight or above, support the matters of the houses they fall in, while signs with fewer, around twenty-five or below, are read as weaker. It is a quick way to grade a chart's strengths.

Sarva and Bhinna

The calculator returns two layers. The Sarvashtakavarga is the total across all seven planets for each sign, the headline strength figure. The Bhinnashtakavarga is each individual planet's own score chart, which shows how strong a particular planet is across the signs. The total of all the Sarvashtakavarga bindus always comes to three hundred and thirty-seven, the fixed sum of the system.

Using the Scores

Ashtakavarga is often used alongside dasha and transit work: a transit through a high-bindu sign tends to bring better results than one through a weak sign. Read it as one measure of strength among several rather than a verdict on its own. An exact birth time and place are required, since the scores depend on the Lagna and house positions.

Reading the 337 Points

The Sarvashtakavarga shares a total of 337 benefic points across the twelve signs, which works out to an average of about twenty-eight per sign. Signs that score above that average count as the stronger areas of the chart, and those below it as the weaker, so the scoreboard gives you a quick map of where a chart is well supported. The calculator prints the figure for every sign, so the high and low ground is easy to spot.

How the Points Are Earned

Each point, or bindu, is contributed by a planet to a sign using classical Parashari tables that count benefic positions from set reference points. Add up the contributions of all the planets to one sign and you get its Sarva total; isolate a single planet and you get its Bhinnashtakavarga. The tool computes both, so you can read the overall strength of a sign and the say each planet has in it.

Where the Scores Are Used

Ashtakavarga earns its keep in timing. A planet transiting a sign that holds many bindus is expected to give smoother results than the same planet crossing a thin sign, which is why practitioners check the scoreboard before reading a transit. Treat the numbers as a strength gauge built into the chart, a way to weigh one area against another rather than a forecast on their own.

Ashtakavarga Questions

What is Ashtakavarga?

Ashtakavarga is a Vedic system that scores the strength of each sign by adding benefic points, called bindus, contributed by the seven planets. The combined score across all signs is the Sarvashtakavarga.

What is a good bindu score?

A sign with twenty-eight bindus or more is read as strong and supportive, while one with around twenty-five or fewer is weaker. The total across all signs always adds up to three hundred and thirty-seven.

How is Ashtakavarga used?

It is often combined with dasha and transit analysis. A planet transiting a high-bindu sign tends to give better results than one crossing a weak sign, so the scores help refine timing.
