Newsletter & Horoscope Digest

The site has a built-in newsletter so you can build an audience you own, rather than relying only on search traffic.

Subscribers and broadcasts

Visitors subscribe through the newsletter form, with a confirmation step. From Admin, Newsletter you can send a broadcast to all confirmed subscribers, for example to announce new tools or content.

The horoscope digest

The site can also send a personalised daily horoscope digest to subscribers who saved their date of birth. Each email is tailored to the subscriber's sign and links back to the site, which is a gentle, recurring reason for readers to return. It is a retention feature as much as a content one.

Read it before anyone else does

Write the subject and body, then press Send me a test first. It goes to your own admin address unless you name another, and it is built and sent by exactly the same code as the real broadcast, so what arrives is what subscribers would get: tracked links, unsubscribe footer and headers included.

That button is deliberately the first control in the form, which also makes it what the Enter key triggers. A stray keystroke sends one email to you rather than the newsletter to everybody.

What the send report means

After a broadcast you will see something like Sent to 4 confirmed subscriber(s). 8 unconfirmed subscriber(s) were skipped. Only confirmed subscribers are ever emailed. If your own address is among the skipped, you will not receive the broadcast, and the send was not broken.

Re-subscribing an address sets it back to unconfirmed and issues a fresh token. That also kills the link in any earlier confirmation email, so use the newest one. This catches people out: they unsubscribe to test the link, subscribe again, and then wonder why the next broadcast never arrives.

Who is still reading

Links in a broadcast are rewritten to pass through your own domain so clicks can be counted, and the subscriber list shows a Last click column. The unsubscribe link is never rewritten: it has to work instantly.

Clicks are counted, opens are not. Open tracking needs a hidden image, and Apple Mail loads every image before the recipient sees anything, so a large share of reported opens are nobody at all. A click is a person.

A dash in that column is a hint, not proof. Somebody who reads every issue and never clicks looks exactly like somebody who never received it. No IP address or browser is recorded with a click.

Email must be configured first; see Email setup.
