What the Four Pillars Are
BaZi means eight characters, because the chart is made of four pillars and each pillar has two parts, a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. The Day Master
The heavenly stem of the day pillar is your Day Master, the single most important element in the chart. It represents you. Everything else is read in relation to it: which elements support it, which drain it, and which it controls. A strong Day Master and a weak one are read very differently, so this is the first thing a BaZi reading establishes.
The Five Elements
