What the Day Master Is
A full BaZi chart has four pillars, year, month, day, and hour, each with a stem and a branch. Of all eight characters, the stem of the day pillar is singled out as the Day Master, the symbol of you. Everything else in the chart is then read in relation to it, as influences that support, drain, or challenge your core element.
The Ten Day Masters
Because there are five elements in yang and yin forms, there are ten possible Day Masters, from Yang Wood to Yin Water. Yang Wood is often likened to a tall tree, Yin Wood to a vine, Yang Fire to the sun, Yin Fire to a candle. These vivid images give each Day Master a distinct flavour beyond its bare element.
How It Is Calculated
The Day Master comes from the sexagenary cycle, the sixty-day rotation of stem and branch pairs. The calculator works out which stem rules your day of birth and names your Day Master, its element, and its polarity, the foundation a fuller BaZi analysis builds on.

A weak Day Master is outnumbered and benefits from elements that nourish and reinforce it. This strong-or-weak judgement shapes which elements are considered favourable for a person, and it is why two people with the same Day Master can need very different things from their charts.
